I'd recommend WorldPay's FuturePay product for subscription payments:

I know WorldPay can be integrated with php/mysql and AFAIK they can work
with A&L merchant accounts. In fact a few years ago WorldPay set up a
product specifically for Alliance & Leicester customers called NetShop, but
I'm not sure if it's still available or if it's relevant to your
requirements.

I've set up e-commerce sites using WorldPay before; they offer a great deal
of flexibility to customise pages to your own site's design, so there's a
seamless integration between your site and WorldPay's.

If you require a simpler (but less flexible) solution to take subscription
payments I'd also recommend PaySystems.com; I've used them in the past and
found their set up and integration process much easier than WorldPay.
