suggestion 2.

absolutely position box a top0, left 0;

relatively position box b + c but pad the content by the width of box a.

more sensible suggestions require more knowledge of what's in the boxes.

I've been playing with this layout:

because I wanted a footer, but the principle applies equally as well to
your situation - just drop the third column and add padding to the
header...
