If you've got a CD burner then download a copy of memtest86
(www.memtest86.com IIRC) and create a bootable CD from the ISO, then
boot to it and let it run through a few complete cycles. It'll take
longer on an Athlon than an Intel processor (it's optimised for x86
strangely enough) but it'll still tell you whether the memory is
knackered or not.
