Rich,
If you're Linux savvy and have a correcly featured
phone connected via a serial port, you can use some
software called "Kannel" to send and receive text
messages via the attached phone. Did this ages ago
with an old laptop and a Nokia 2150 with data card.
Couldn't think of a groovy use for it at the time, so
left it mouldering in the machine room.
Gotchas:
- low volume, limited by single phone
- you pay for text messages you send out
- no groovy short SMS number
Wins
- cheap as chips for low volume and if you already
charge a seperate subscription fee, or can get
your attached mobile on a fixed price, many SMS
subscription
