FN-FORUM: Problems Networking Win2k Pro to XP Home
date posted 18th February 2004 18:12
Hi,
Can anyone help. I've just upgraded the second computer with Win XP Home
Edition and I'm having trouble networking to my main computer running Win2K
Pro. I can Ping each computer and get a response from each. I can't ping to
an outside address from the client computer. I can see the client computer's
C drive from the Administrator, but I can't see the Administrator's C drive
from the client. I can connect OK to the Internet using a cable modem from
the main computer. But the client computer just can't seem to locate the
LAN. I've set up both with respective IP addresses and I've entered the
clients IP address into the Norton Firewall settings ( I did have problem
before with this when the client computer was using Win2K as well, but
inputting the IP address in the allowed list seemed to work OK then, but not
now)
I think that's everything I've done, but I'm still not seeing the Internet
via the second computer. Is there any quick fixes here that doesn't involve
me spending out any more. Seeing that XP Home was £179, plus the costs for
the new parts.
One thing I would like to say is that I didn't like this Activation process
from MS. As XP decided that it wanted the code now and wouldn't even give me
my 30 days grace, so I had to ring the automated phone line, seeing as I
don't have internet connection with the XP computer. And I think having to
fork out another £179 for my second computer is damn annoying. I rang their
help line and a rather abrupt person said it's our strict policy that their
should be one OS for one computer, damn the small home networker working to
a budget. Corporate b******s, rant over.
So if anyone could help out here I'd appreciate it, thanks.
Steve
