Putting a gateway address in won't make them ping each other - only used for
getting to the Internet. Are you sure you don't have a firewall? The cable
is definitely a X-over, isn't it, not a regular...

If you are using ICS, set the other one to DHCP (and the one with ICS will
set itself to 192.168.0.1). What you have got should work, though with the
addition of a def gateway. Easier to get ICS to do...

Change the cable, if no hub, must be cross-over cable. Make sure network
card speed etc is not set to auto, try 100 half. Make sure XP isn't trying
to bridge connections.
