Err! Long time deciding. I guess I decided I wanted to spend my =A3500 =
on the
best optics I could buy for that money and not include a goto, also =
keeping
in mind size and portability. The Meade equivalent is well over =A31000. =
The
skywatcher range only recently added a Makusov. It boiled down to either =
a
6" reflector - Orion or Celestron advanced - but they are rather =
large!!! Or
a Newtonian-catoptrics mix - which is a shorter tube. But then I read =
the
image quality of the Makutovs was exceptional. I went to the Astrofest =
on
the 6th Feb, and had a ask around. Met a amateur astronomer by the
Skywatcher range - huge range, and we discussed what I wanted, and =
agreed
having a goto took the fun out of finding things lol, he was very
knowledgeable. Also helped me choose a pair of binoculars for my 6 year
old - they had a table ladened with x-stuff. Got a brill pair, =
waterproof,
compos, 8x24 =A313!

Theresa,
It was me you had a chat with. So you didn't go for the
Meade? Just out of curiosity, what made you go for SkyWatcher instead?
Dave.

Getting the finder lined up is a pain in the bum but well worth it.
Is it a motor drive or mechanical drive?
I have a very old Polaris motor drive which I use occasionally for
astro-photography and when I first aligned it it took me the best part
of an evening, using the Pole star to get it sorted. After that though
it was fine....the fact that I was always lugging it around did cause
some slippage over the years, so now the first task of the night is
always to check the darn thing.
Perhaps time for a new drive...this one must be about 15 years old.....
Joe
