Re: FN-FORUM: Full-time designer needed

Whilst agreeing that good design in the UK is at a premium, I gesitate to
put the crap design all at the door of 'gifted (or otherwise) amateurs. As
you say, 'form follows function' but I'd also say that good design must also
include fitness for purpose, cost effectiveness, meeting client (and
end-user) needs, usability and several other factors.
These seem to be areas in which designers with design degrees drop the ball
as often as those without the degrees. I'd also hesitate to say that
professionalism equates to having a degree. I don't have an IT degree (or
any formal IT qualification) but I'd say I'm a VERY professional software
and Web developer. Professionalism is about maintaining skills, delivering
service in a timely and cost effective manner and ultimately giving the
customer what they want, when they want it and advising on how best to do
it.
Just my 2p...:-)

Peter,
Yr right, 19K would be even better ;-)
Well, im quite fortunate actually, as it is a small, local design studio
based in Spitalfields, East London, whom I initially did work experience
with at the end of my 2nd year at university. They started off working
primarily with charities, but over time are now working with the big boys
such as Dazed and Confused, Sony etc... They also got a recent government
pitch for a re-brand of the Crimestoppers organisation.
They prefer to employ people they know - or through the usual networking
than advertising openly or directly to potential employees - so its just one
of those things.
Also, something I have noticed whilst subscribing to this forum - a lot of
people aren't necessarily qualified with an
Art/Design/Architecture/Multimedia degree - which is of serious concern to
me. I find that a lot of people out there call themselves designers - when
really all they can do is create a website (which a lot of the times isn't
that good at all) - but have no idea about colour theory, rules, layout,
typography and the process of design..
It gives us 'real' designers a bad name too. The UK is full of a lot of bad
design and we are probably the ones who will end up having to correct their
mistakes!
Sorry to moan - but I feel strongly on this - so if that sounds familiar to
anyone out there in this forum - remember - 'form follows function' - and
never forget your design process - sketch first, plan out your designs/ideas
and then, ONLY then do you even think of getting things on the screen!!!
Cheers,
Hesan

Let's hope accuracy and numeracy aren't requirements then ;-)
Although, if it really is #19,000K I'd be interested in any vacancies
they have, at any level ...
