I had a similar situation to this as well at the end of last year with a
client who was on Register.com. Unfortunately if the DNS is no longer
with Register.com then all mail will have been deleted. I spoke to
several levels of customer support and discovered that it is an
automated process which cleans up once a customer leaves. You could try
pressing them to get it out of a backup I suppose but it's highly
unlikely anything is recoverable...

I've learnt my lesson... :)
