MS SQL Server normally operates on port 1433... you could try telnetting to
your server on port 1433 to see if there is a response. To get round it, you
might try changing your SQL servers TCP port to another value other than
1433 (if you can access a remote telnet or desktop session, and it is your
own SQL server, not shared).

Thought that might possibly help
