You need to boot from CD to install XP (so if you need to change it, it's
not set to CD), the default is floppy, surely it's pretty unlikely that a
non-techie would change a PC to boot from hard drive...

As soon as it starts to load the OS (and read boot.ini), you're too late.
The only way to slow that down is to go into, the BIOS and make sure that it
does a full memory test...

Precisely and the quickest way to keep trying is boot off a DOS floppy so
you don't keep having to wait for the OS to load and shutdown if you get it

Yes, I'm aware of that. BUT on later machines (my old vaio laptop for =

Can they do a search for boot.ini, open in notepad and change the
timeout=30 to timeout=90 that should extend the time.

page.. I could then sell the printer on ebay for £5 (?) reducing the
cost per page 2.5p and not bother buying ink carts for it.....
