you don't have to use the e-gov standards, it's just that they are
convenient, well documented and starting to become a "standard" and don't
appear to clash with any other apps.
imaging how irritated you'd be if the f1 key didn't bring up help, but
shutdown your browser instead, or the f5 key opened a new window instead
of refreshed the one you are in.
if you want to choose you're own letters for accesskeys - that's fine, but
you'd better research which are already allocated.
