AVG anti-virus
HijackThis

The last is there for use by a techie when things go wrong, but should be
downloaded and installed *before* the machine becomes unusable... all=20
of them are pretty straightforward to install and run.

Most problems can be avoided by installing Firefox as the default browser
and just about anything in preference to Outlook / OE.
