I always make sure that I have a very clear understanding of what they need.
Work up a spec. Can often by quite vague X pages, one form etc. That way we
know what they are expecting and what I need to deliver. I have found a
check list system works quite well (as long as you expand on it), so you
want one of these 2 of those does it need to do x? etc.

Once we have agreed that, give them an approximate timescales and jump right
in.

Always put it on a staging server and inform them at key points in the
development. i.e.. Here's a flat jpg, here's the template, here's the
complete site and finally there you go where's my cheque :)
