I would think for it to actually propagate over a lan would be going
into worm type of code that 'should' be picked up by the virus
checker.

Spyware/adware always seams to make it onto your system somehow no
matter how careful you are, always use a limited account so that you
system files are protected or alternatively just put the windows cd in
the bin and choose a secure os.
