RE: Re[2]: FN-FORUM: Advertising for 'home PC repair' work..

date posted 5th January 2005 18:55

Depends on the level of the upgrade but parts are charged at cost plus
shipping if any applies. We price based on whether stuff on the hard =
drive
has to be kept or whether any of it can be lost. Backups take =
time...time
is money (and I have charged as much as =A320 for a backup). Usually I =
set
the backups to be done overnight while I sleep through my network.
On average an uncomplicated upgrade of a computer not including =
components
will yield us about =A350-60. Total time spent on the average machine =
is
about 3 and a half hours. Most machines are "broadband-ready" when they
leave this house. It is similar to a PC World tariff but we actually
identify problems and offer best solutions before going ahead. I think =
many
people have found that PC World's solution has been just to upgrade and
reinstall software and too bad about info on the hard drive. People are
very willing to pay for the service we've found. I told one client =
recently
that it would be 6 weeks until I could look at her machine...her =
response
was no problem, she'll wait.

The really great thing is I've stopped advertising this service as many =
of
my clients are spreading the word themselves. Still an extra =A3200 per =
month
can help many households.

I keep a sort of client record as well which is handy. It includes the
normal contact details but also the type of machine they have brought me =
and
what sorts of upgrades I have done or problems. I also make note of any
backups done and whether I might still have a copy in my records. It's =
very
reminiscent of a patient file that a doctor might keep.

the burning question is what do they pay?

do you do a PC world style tarriff just at lower pices, or a fixed price
plus parts or an hourly rate or what?

I've been toying with the idea for ages (targeting the silver surfers) =
but
never got round to it...

Any other good tips...

;o)
