hmm, sometimes the login banner (it's usually there by default) says
what type of OS/Version it is.
However, it is merely /etc/issue (at least under linux) and you can
stuff any old crap in there. Login and type uname -a , that should
give you a good idea of what O/S it is.

of course windows doesn't show this :D
