Similar to the problems on my 3 year old iBook. Two things can cause
this problem on the iBook - a loose video chip and/or a frayed video
cable that feeds the screen (through a pretty badly thought-out screen
hinge).

There are really good websites with step-by-step instructions on how to
dissasemble Apple laptops to perform HD upgrades or fix common problems.
Perhaps there are similar pages for your Vaio?
