Northumbria has beautiful coastline (Druridge Bay/Bamburgh Castle etc)
and fantastic scenery inland (Cheviots in particular) - or for a bit
of history, Cragside, the first house in the world to be lit by
electricity - and stretches about as far North as Berwick upon Tweed,
historic border town, salmon fishing etc...
Loads of things to do and see:

If you're coming to the Toon to see that 'blinking bridge' give me a
call.

I live 10 mins walk from the quayside and can give you the guided tour
of both the old and new - Newcastle is a pretty spectacular place
these days. Might be able to offer you a bed for the night if you
fancy a few beers in our many bars!
Dunno about specific cottages, but Beadnell or Seahouses would be a
good base for exploring:

HTH if you want any more info nearer the time, I'm happy to help.
Paul.
P.S. the weather is very variable ;-)
