Northumbria is a v. good place for castles! I like Alnwick (town and
castle) - very typically picturesque and brilliant views. Have stayed near
there a couple of times.

As for cottages, looking at Hoseasons' cottages is never a bad idea. They
can be a little more pricey, but tend to be pretty much guaranteed to be
nice places.
When are you planning to go? It gets pretty busy in the summer. Not quite as
bad as the Lakes, but pretty hectic in the school holidays.
