Technically, only protein and essential fatty acids are "essential".
Carbohydrate certainly isn't. But what works seems to depend on the
individual. Some people do very well on high carb diets while other are
miserable and bloated. The low-fat, high-carb diets that came in the 80s
fattened up masses of my customers in no time (and turned a small minority
into spelks!) This is based on nearly 20 years of observation (as a women's
fitness instructor). Dieting - excessive calorie restriction - is definitely
a bad thing whatever daft plan you follow, unless you intend to do it for
ever as a means of extending your lifespan (works for mice).
As diet books go, the Blood type diet and metabolic typing (aka Eat right 4
your type) seem the most sensible.
