FN-FORUM: Started as "make decisions for me" now "colourant v colorant" debate
date posted 22nd January 2005 00:02
NB Wasn't able to continue thread in usual way (see separate thread and=20=
my .mac/mail problem) so have pasted history to a new thread whilst=20
subject is still current(ish). Of course given the other thread this=20
one may not last!!!
Thanks Kathy
At this point I should admit that in my conversation with my client (it=20=
remained convivial, the frustration came after the call. Ever the=20
professional, you see.),
I didn't have immediate access to a dictionary and I didn't think about=20=
Dictionary .com being American (obvious now of course).
My stance was one of experience from my previous employment, where the=20=
word was used regularly.
The Collins dictionary we used only had an entry for colorant, not=20
colourant =96 I've just double checked.
However it is a 1983 copy and a cross reference with the 2004 Chambers=20=
dictionary shows both spellings.
So maybe it's the case that traditionally there is no U, but language=20
being what language is =96 endlessly evolving and endlessly fascinating =
=96
it is now acceptable with both spellings. Maybe.
The frustration wasn't really about the rights and wrongs (as 'the=20
client is always right') but more the reasoning that 'our competitors=20
do it that way' as a preference to referring to a dictionary. This is=20
never a good enough reason if (and I stress if, subject to checking)=20
it's wrong.
Any way I'm now in danger of getting really boring=85 =85
Dave
PS Interestingly the auto spellcheck on this email keeps questioning=20
colourant but not colorant. Don't know if yours did the same?
David
Oops! Dictionary.com is US not British. Client is correct (or at least=20=
in
agreement with OED).
