Have to say, I'm largely with DS here, DG did seem to get it with both
barrels and the retribution was disproportionate to the 'offence'.
As a graphic designer myself, I think the aforementioned offence (m'lud) was
deemed by Carla to be against 'Design' itself and the thought that the
poorly designed site (bravely admitted as such by DG) could be put right by
simply looking at sites that were deemed by forum members to have been 'well
designed'.
Carla is very obviously a canny designer (her instant response to the
bitroot image problem on another thread was great - visual pun and
sympathetic, striking colour scheme). She is obviously passionate about her
design and, I imagine, took offence that someone can imply that a bit of
research on well designed web sites will suddenly make them a good designer
- when the best designers will: a) have a natural aptitude and b) have
spent 4 years at college honing their talents. Good design is not easy.
But I'm sure there are excellent coders out there who will think similarly
derogatory thoughts about upstart designers - and will have a bloody good
giggle at the rather clunky and inelegant code holding together a designer's
'pretty' web site.
And then there are the majority who fit between the two extremes.
We're all in the same boat. Freelancers looking for a bit of help, support
and 'community' spirit.
So to conclude, I diagnose chill pills all round - I got that out of
Doctoring for Dummies, excellent book and currently on offer at Amazon.
I rest my case.
