FN-FORUM: site publishing guide

I will soon be publishing my first site and have chosen a suitable
hosting package (www.hostroute.co.uk reseller).
Does anyone know of a suitable online guide (or book) that explains the
steps involved in getting your site online or is it as simple as
uploading your
files to the right directory and setting the permissions (I'm a bit
paranoid about security) ? Hostroute has a manual
for its control panel but doesn't really explain why things have to be
done as they say and I like to know why I'm doing things.
Is it safe just to suck it and see ?
