Dear Any Answers,
I have to express my alarm at Charles Clarke's proposal to introduce
new measures to detain or restrict the movements of UK citizens as a
response to the alleged 'terrorist threat'.
This Government has been waging a creeping but relentless assault on
long established checks and balances on the power of the State.
We have the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, past attempts to
restrict the long established right to trial by jury, the abominable
and illegal detentions at Belmarsh and of course the National Identity
card. Fortunately, due to government incompetence with respect to IT
projects, the Biometric Card and its back end computer database will
simply not work. However, we are about to spend upwards of =A33 billion
discovering this. I could cite other examples, however I fear they are
too numerous to mention in a short email.
Contrary to Mr. Blair's assertions =96 this country is NOT facing a
grave threat to its way of life. This is the application of the
Politics of Fear as a device to get re-elected.
Fortunately, we still have the right to express our opinion at the
ballot box. It is my hope that British voters will wake up to the
truth which is that the only 'grave threat' to the British way of life
is this Government's obsession with a 'crisis' which is largely of
their own making.
If they really want to lower the risk of future terrorist attacks,
changing UK foreign policy will be an excellent start.
Sincerely,
Dave Edwards
PS - It didn't make it onto the air waves - by the sound of things,
they were spoiled for choice ;-)
