just spent a day arsing around with mozilla/thunderbird and finally
mail. editing config files etc. :(

I would always compress a PNG image using JPG or GIF. GIF compression works
best (ie, makes smaller file sizes) for images with large areas of of flat
colour, JPG for more 'busy' images.

I think your pretty safe using .png images until you try using
transparent backgrounds and overlayed images, Internet Explorer (Unless
it's been fixed in the last six months) doesn't handle...

Which version of the popular browsers would a visitor have to be using?

firmware because 9 times out of 10, its the settings and updating the
firmware could be a mistake.
