Eeeeeek! First. Don't use Telnet! It has no encryption, everyone on the net just saw your root password (anyone looking). Use ssh! Your server probably has sshd installed, all you need is a client....

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I've seen something similar. When IE opens a word document in the browser it has to download and cache it first before it launches it in an out of process Word app....
