Sounds like dead/dying HD or controller. You can reseat Dell RAM easily by
opening the little door in the base of the laptop, but probably no point.

Yes - sorry should have explained a bit further - that was the smallest I
could get in both programs without losing 'massive' amounts of quality.
There's always going to be a trade off between file...

OK - now the machine has warmed up (1 hour or so) it wont do anything, cant
see the HD type errors - Booting from the XP CD for recovery fails to list
any drives.

Hmmm.. i think fireworks' "selective compression" is having a good
attempt...
2 settings on this one... 48% for the background, 80% for the detail.
Total filesize : 160k.

Have you had a look at Windows Firewall?
Goto Start -> Control Panel -> Windows Firewall
