If you are a linux user why not just use thunderbird.
if you have a server you can setup a filter via exim or any kind of spamassasin
software.

Ok, might investigate if I need to delve further. I've found a trial of
NIS which is what the client is using so if I can't replicate the issue

you can chmod your file or directory only in your ftp client if you don't have
