OK - thanks - I will try reinstalling the tools in the morning. Reinstalling sql server itself earlier today didn't sort it out. They both have Window authentification only at the moment which works...

I'd suggest reinstaling the SQL server tools on both machines. You shouldn't really need to have sql server tools on both machines - just have them on the master machine and connect that way. You migh...
