I'd say that was a good approach. It may not get the leads that a
similar site would by displaying "typical" prices, with disclaimers of
course, but it is far better than a pointless registration
requirement. It is always worth looking at what other similar
companies do. Just because they don't do things a certain way does not
make an apparently original approach a good one, other people may have
tried it and found it doesn't work.
One pretty solid rule is that site visitors want to find the
information they seek on a web site, and then be able to easily
contact the company if the product is of interest - NOT give their
contact details to a company that may or may not sell what they want
at a price they are willing to pay. Break this rule at your peril,
because people will go find a competitors site that does provide the
information they seek, and they will probably never even bother
contacting you.
