RE: FN-FORUM: Accessing PC from Remote Location
date posted 6th August 2005 16:58
If you want interactive access, Windows XP comes with "remote desktop"
to allow remote administration. It's quite handy and personally I find
it much more usable than Radmin or WinVNC, plus it's built into the OS
so no extra software required.
Make sure you have a decent password and change it regularly.
With all that said, you want access to files.. Have you considered
simply installing an FTP Server? You already have one available (via
IIS) if you run XP Pro on your home PC, failing that there are plenty of
other freebies. If you do use IIS for FTP, it might be advisable to
disable the webserver (unless your familiar with the pre-installed
scripts), or not install the webserver aspect of it at all.
Obviously you're opening your home PC up by opening ports, regardless of
Radmin/Remote Desktop/FTP/SSH, so I would enable audit logging on your
machine and keep an eye on activity.
