Is the disk split into different drives?

If so make sure you install the recovery software onto the drive that
doesn't contain the missing files.

Also make sure that he stops using the laptop until you have either
been able to take an image of the disk or attempt recovery - any saving
of files, etc could result in the lost files no longer being
recoverable.

It is a bit basic, but free.

Could he just have just lost the files on the disk?
