Thanks for the reply Nathan,
Permissions: I take it these are part of a file header or something? I would
have assumed that anything internal to the file would be preserved or is
this not the case?...

Why not set up a Linux machine with Samba running on it and then assign
shares on the Linux machine. You could then use a free backup prog called
bacula which can back up the files to a dvd or cd
