RE: FN-FORUM: Freelance Websites

Hello all,
I've been out of the office for a couple of days and have returned to sift
my email - wow - did I miss a fight?
Dawn & Alain - you should join the MENSA forum, you'd fit right in - they'd
be dissecting that Latin for another month yet and all the while, Lucy just
wanted some tips about Ltd companies etc.
Well Lucy, for my 2p: I was advised never to go VAT reg'd unless I could
balance the books and as a web designer, there really shouldn't be any
chance of that unless you keep losing your PC or something. I do a lot of
work for SME's and start-ups who welcome the lack of VAT as they are not
registered either - Companies who are registered have never mentioned any
problem with it.
Ltd company? Only necessary (I was advised) if you have a lot of cashflow.
If you were to buy 200 computers to build someone a network and they changed
their mind, and all of a sudden you couldn't pay - as a sole trader I think
they may be able to take your 'personal' assets like your house and car. But
if you were a Ltd company they could only take the company assets like your
PC and stapler.
Both are expensive options that as far as I can see wouldn't make me any
money, nor would they save me any. So, soul trader it is - and a happy old
soul at that ;-).
