Laura, a few comments as you're in the Scottish jurisdiction.
First, as you've only been there 9 months you have no claim before a
tribunal. Second, given that the claims are from a single source you may
consider raising an action of interdict and interdict ad interim so the
court can make an order protecting you. If you, and your colleague, can
prove your portfolios (and therefore that you did not obtain the job by
deception) the court may well consider that a dismissal to an artistic
designer can be a commercial blow of such magnitude as to warrant
protection. See a solicitor without delay as it will take a week or two to
draw up papers and lodge them if you go this route. Do not tell the employer
or threaten such action. Just do it. An order of this type may have
repercussions upon the person making claims about you and your colleague,
for it will place the spotlight of company owners upon him and bring to
their attention they face substantial legal fees. Do not, under any
circumstances "blackmail" as this places you in a bad light and could
potentially lead to the criminal charge of extortion.
A much more valid suggestion is to move on, grow bold by it. I'm in
Edinburgh and as mentioned earlier am looking to expand should you care to
make contact.
Good luck!
Mike A.
