You make a good point; but horses for courses, I think.

If a site has a ready made database containing the information you want to
publish, creating a feed is very simple and interfacing with third party
stuff can be tricky. Particularly true if you need to secure the feed.

In this case, though, it does look like starting from scratch is not the way
to go even if the exact look of the web page cannot be replicated in the
blog.
