The reason I suggested a RAM checkup is because I had problems with my
other machine with exactly the same symptoms - tried booting up, got
'system file missing' messages under Linux, and BSOD under Windows.=20
The problem was that the kernel, core files etc were loaded into
corrupt sectors of the memory, hence errors on reading. Funnily, if i
left the machine to 'warm up' for a few minutes and reset, I usually
managed to boot OK. I eventually narrowed it down to one of the 2 RAM
sticks using Memtest86, and all has been 100% fine since it was
replaced.
