Separate queries is your only choice for mysql 3x
Id really push for version 4 if I was you, it's a major improvement over 3,
5 is supposed to be amazing compared to 4 too, but ive not had chance to
paly around with v5 yet...

I'm nearly certain that sub-querys are not supported until MySQL 4.x.x
