If it's not getting any further than 'boot from CD,' I'd guess it's a
controller/cable problem. Which would also explain why the ntoskernel
file wasn't copied or extracted. (If the CD/HD are on the same one.)
I'd say though that even if it is a problem with the hard disk itself
you're *probably* not going to do any damage to another system if you
swap it out.
Sometimes resetting the BIOS to defaults can sort problems with device
detection. It won't hurt anything (other than losing custom settings,
which you should write down.) Go into the system's BIOS and choose the
option to 'restore to defaults' (or some variation.) Then try again.
