Hi -
It would depend on the directory. Some are set up as paid directories, some
free listings, and many generate some kind of revenue, even if it's from
advertising - either direct from the listings...

Just a few corrections here, all in my opinion:
Terry, by "most of the search engine optimizers", I believe you mean
"some".
Putting in a robots.txt file won't stop anyone who's spidering your site...
