I couldn't do that. I have a mental block that stops me from committing to

I believe it's Outlook Express that has a nasty habit of renaming the file
extension of attached files to .dat. Ask the sender what format it is and
rename the extension accordingly.

Try sniffing around on google for TNEF encoding issues, I'm not sure if you
can reverse the problem as a recipient, but that's almost certainly what it
is.

Sounds like antivirus software changed it to a .dat file. I have seen this
happen with some virus software tools, why ask them to put it on an FTP site
somewhere, or zip it.
