RE: FN-FORUM: Qualifications
date posted 21st March 2006 14:03
Qualifications are what set us all apart, and point an employer in the
direction of a candiditate. Experience is extremely important if your 30+ in
years, then employers don't want someone who has been in education all their
lives.
As a senior HR person told me once, "It doesn't what the person has
qualifications in, what it shows is that the person can assimiliate data and
the ability adapt".
Experience is essential, only if they are backed up by qualifications.
My belief anyway.. I am sure people will disagree, or maybe I spent too many
years in large companies.

Don't worry so much about the certifications - the important thing (and
you'll find this in most job ads) is experience. Anyone can spent three
grand on a certification course and learn to answer multiple choice
questions the Microsoft Way.
You would be better off dedicating the time and effort to creating a
practical and technically excellent website for something that you find
interesting or somewhere you perceive a need for one. Write it, get it up
and running, administer it and include it on your CV. You will find that the
experience you gain from doing that will make much more of a difference than
some very expensive letters and you will learn a lot about real world
programming. It's easy to think you know about this when you come out of
university (I certainly did) but actually you know next to nothing and the
important thing is to get some real experience under your belt.
A good degree would help also, probably more than worrying about outside
exams while you could be finishing that off...
