RE: FN-FORUM: Qualifications

Very astute sir yes, always have done. Not something I need to worry about
anymore as I am now my own boss.
But in Telecoms and IT you will often find that Job apps are first dealt
with HR or worse, - agencies. These people love things like CCNA because
they don't need to know what it is - they just make 2 piles, one with and
one without ... one of which goes in the bin, so why risk it? If you can do
the job then get yourself to the interview by any means fair or foul and
take it from there.
Personally, I have never got a job that I have applied for vie the normal
channel or 'vacancy' etc. All of my jobs in the past have resulted in:
1. Deciding what I want to do.
2. Deciding where I want to do it.
3. Finding people in that place that do what I want to do.
4. Study them & find out about them, what makes them tick - what would they
want to hear??
5. Contact their Engineering Director and tell him you want to work for him
... not the HR woman - the Chief Engineer, Operations Director or whatever -
but someone who speaks your language.
This usually results in a casual chat, followed by an official one ... and
eventually you come in and meet the HR woman with your 'CV' in your hand for
what WOULD have been your initial interview but this time - is a tick in the
box.
Is it just me then - or has anyone else done it this way?? Blimey. Don't
read papers or job vacancies, go and make the job up to fill your skill set
and then fill it - I remember having a job interview in Germany once and he
asked me what I would like my 'title' to be - 'Technical Manager UK' I
answered gleefully - 'whatever' he answered and scribbled it on my notes.
How many technical guys were in the UK ... yup, just me - 'managing' myself
- excellent!!
BTW - I get the feeling I am a lot older than most here (36) - is that
right??
Cheers,
Max.
You make it sound almost like you add qualifications you don't have to
your CV...
