Simple,
Call the please wait page first by passing it the search fields, then have
it call the search result page. Since the search result page wont show
anything until it is finished the please wait...

Not knowing much about javascript, I thought I could call a
displayPopup function as the page opens (so not onload, but something
like onOpen, if that exists), and then call a closePopup...
