I'm a programmer type also. Or at least came to web development from
that background.
Commonly I use php/SQL and javascript for web stuff ( using a homebrew,
vi ( tSkeleton ) based development env with macros and templates of
code, smarty templates, stanzas of xhtml and css).
Silll use tiny bits of C, perl, sed awk for donkey work tasks as req.
I can't say I find the list dominated by designer types - most but I
tend only to look at programming related posts :-) and there do seem
some respectable programming heads on the list.
I'd think that all these labels are a bit confused anaway.
Designer could be someone who designs a web application or someone who
makes sure a page has just the right layout, colours fonts etc.
One might expect a programmer to be someone who cuts executable code to
preform the spec of the designer of a web application.
Hence I usually describe myself as a website developer. Most of what I
do is
Collect Clients Requirements.
Translate this into the spec / design a web app
( design as in plan NOT as in drawing :-) )
Cut the code, templates, css
Play with colours fonts and static graphics
Install web app to live server
Advise / train client in use of and assist with wording towards SEO
favourable content.
-----------
There are others that make prettier brain dead or broken sites, the web
industry has more than its share are many cargo cult coders, fools with
fancy tools and cut and paste merchants .
So it goes.
