Hi,
Yes if I simply hit return and start typing more text I often land
up with numerous spans popping up. Also Visual Studio 2005 does not remove
unneeded spans after text deletion. I have also noticed that when in design
mode ( which is where all the problems originate) you could hit backspace
and wipe out a whole block if it happens to be there (invisibly).

Sorry you said VS.NET which is the previous version of Visual Studio and
produced bad HTML markup. Do you mean your controls are creating lots of
spans? If so, that is not a result of the VS application but the .Net
framework as far as I am aware.
