RE: FN-FORUM: My first freelance job
date posted 11th October 2006 14:36
Hi Kitty,
I have had a look - overall, I think it is a very good attempt; I have =
seen
other people ask for opinions via this forum, about web sites they have
created, so I would not worry - this is not spamming. It would only be
spamming if you simply advertised the site to lots of people - here you =
are
asking for help, which is different.
In the meantime, here are my thoughts - please forgive the length:
1. I noticed one small slip up - "and obtained BA Music"; I think you =
meant
to say "and obtained a BA degree in Music". I know this is a small =
thing,
but for some reason, these small things tend to be easier to spot when
publishing online. I think it is the only grammatical error I have been =
able
to find - people notice this, so text has to be absolutely perfect!
2. "Design and graphics copyright =A9 2006 Digital Kittyn, except =
original
photography used by permission of Liza Finn. Best viewed in 1024x768"
My feeling about this is that it should really be towards the bottom of =
the
page - you do not need to have 2 copyright symbols; either one (ideally =
the
symbol) is sufficient. Some people say that putting the best screen
resolution is not ideal, as it might suggest that your site can only be
viewed at this resolution, and that people might feel forced to change =
their
screen resolutions in order to view the site. To be perfectly honest, I
don't think it is necessary, and would probably not include it.
3. Is there a particular reason for using MySpace as your hosting =
provider?
I know it might be cheap (or even free); I accept it might be a good way =
for
Liza to promote herself within the MySpace community. However, it does =
come
across as an excuse for MySpace to advertise itself, whilst also =
removing
some of the impact from your client's image. I would have a look around =
to
see if there are any cheap (or free websites), which don't include so =
much
advertising - as an example, you could try the beginner's web hosting
service from 1 and 1, which is about =A32.50 a month. I know it means an
outlay, but paid for web hosting is so much better than free ones; it =
gives
a better image, it allows you more freedom in what you can do, and =
provides
a host of other services as well. MySpace is only really effective for =
use
by registered members...
4. I noticed one big problem with using MySpace - it requires you to =
sign
up, in order to view a number of the facilities you have linked to, such =
as
videos. Whilst this would be OK for existing MySpace users, it does mean
that others need to sign up, just to see parts of the site; this could
discourage them from doing so, particularly if visitors are looking at =
the
site for professional reasons, such as the possibility of your friend
signing at an event (I know, web users can be a fickle bunch!).=20
5. I like the floral border used - it is particularly good that you have =
not
tried to use frames, which I consider a big turn-off on any website.
However, the use of this border illustration on the right hand side of =
the
page does make reading some of the text harder, because of the =
conflicting
colours (black on dark red). I would suggest seeing if you can resize =
some
of the tables and / or layout used, so that it does not spill over the
border illustration used. I think the layout needs more colour, such as =
on
backgrounds for titles, as well as boxes around parts of the text - at =
the
moment, it does give an impression of being all thrown together, without
really grouping particular areas together.=20
Take a look at the "Contacting Zoe" box on
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=3Duser.viewprofile&friend=
id=3D10
4846860, which is one of the contacts your client's site links to, and I
think you will see what I mean.
I hope what I have written above is not too depressing or discouraging -
what you have done is a good attempt, and you should never be scared of
asking for help! I hope what I have put will help improve the site for =
you -
please let me know if you need any further help, on or off list.
Regards,
Alex Libby.
