Last year, I had my ibook's hardrive break on me - it doesn't sound like
you have exactly the same problem, so it might be something that a
decent mac repair shop can fix, but I managed to boot up my hardrive as
an external firewire drive and get my data back. If you've got a
firewire input, you connect your turned-off broken mac to your turned on
working mac with a firewire cable. Then you boot up the broken mac
holding down a certain key to make sure it boots up in firewire mode
(can't remember exactly, think it was 't'). This worked for me because
it seemed to be the boot up part of my disk that was giving most of the
problems. I suspect this might not work for you, but I suggest it
anyway, as it might help somone else some time - when it happened to me
it was very stressful, and I couldn't find much good information.
