Re: FN-FORUM: Acquiring control of a domain

date posted 25th October 2006 19:42

I found that the best thing to do with regards to nameservers and stuff is
to point the domains at ns1, 2, 3 and 4.everydns.net, and set up an account
on there which contains all the nameserver records. That way, you can
update them as and when you need to, and they propogate *really* quickly.
I'm not sure how they do it, TBH, 'cause no other nameservers I've worked
with propogate to the entire planet that fast.

In this scenario, if you've got a client's domain pointing at your dev
server, and they're ready to take over the domain, or transfer it elsewhere,
just get them to register an account on the everydns servers, and just
transfer the records across. :) Really easy.

WRT actually finding out where it's pointing, you can use a combination of
http://www.geektools.net/whois.php and the Linux command "dig" to get the
current nameservers and individual records, eg, "dig mydomain.com" to get
general details, or "dig @NAM.ESE.RVE.RIP mydomain.com [A/CNAME/MX/etc]" to
get a specific record. I had to use this this morning in order to figure
out why a subdomain of my domain was pointing at the wrong server when it
had never been set up to point at that server. Turns out that my local
nameserver had cached the wrong IP when it updated its records, and as a
result the domain pointed at the wrong box.
